Tranquil space, attentive staff

Sitting area at Hines-Rinaldi Funeral HomeBeautifully renovated in 2016, Hines-Rinaldi Funeral Home has a serene, spa-like atmosphere. From the moment you come through our door, you will feel welcome here. Our funeral arrangers are compassionate professionals who listen to what you say and handle your arrangements with great attention to detail.

The funeral home was designed with both comfort and convenience in mind. Our chapel seats 250 and includes an LCD projector, drop-down screen and state-of-the-art sound system. Our skilled staff can put together a multimedia tribute for you.

We'll be honored to create the funeral or memorial service that really embodies a life. Personalized celebrations of life are our specialty. We help you imagine it and then we bring it into focus.

Cremation services in Silver Spring

We specialize in cremation services that honor loved ones in personalized ways, and families love our transparent pricing. With expertise in scattering ashes and a friendly team who pays attention to every detail, we provide service that is second to none.

More and more people are choosing cremation over traditional burial, but most aren’t familiar with the many options:

  • a cremation without a funeral or memorial service of any kind.
  • a funeral with your loved one present, followed by cremation.
  • a cremation followed by a scattering, cemetery memorialization or celebration of life—or all three.

For those who wish for a more momentous memorial, Neptune Memorial Reef is an underwater cremation garden off the coast of Florida. A Celestis Memorial Spaceflight takes ashes into space for a little while or forever.

There are many options for cremation—and they're not all equal. Here's what you can expect when you choose us for your loved one's cremation:

  • Custody of care guaranteed. Our custody-of-care program helps safeguard the identification of your loved one from the time we bring them into our care until the time we return them to your family. We check, cross-check and check again, every step of the way.
  • Exclusive custody of your loved one. We use only crematories owned and operated by Dignity Memorial® providers or trusted partners. Once your loved one is in our custody or that of a trusted partner, they’re in our care until they’re returned to your family.
  • Licensed, certified, conscientious staff. All Dignity Memorial crematory operators are licensed and certified by Cremation Association of North America, or CANA. Only one person at a time is cremated, and the cremation chamber is thoroughly cleaned before the next person is cremated.

History

Lobby at Hines-Rinaldi Funeral HomeStephen H. Hines established his namesake funeral company in 1873. After operating from various locations in Silver Spring, S.H. Hines Funeral Company settled into a building at 1715 14th St. NW just after the turn of the 20th century. From there, the business operated as a casket company, wholesaler of funeral supplies, embalmer and undertaker.

Stephen’s son, W.R. Franklin “Frank” Hines, had joined the firm by 1914, when it was renamed S.H. Hines & Sons Company. Sometime after 1920, the growing business needed more space, so father and son purchased the houses at 2901-2907 14th St. NW and converted them to a funeral home.

In 1953, Michael J. Rinaldi started his Rinaldi Funeral Home, which was first located on H Street Northeast in Washington, D.C., and then later on Georgia Avenue Northwest.

A funeral home partnership forms

In the late 60s, Frank and Michael partnered up, combining resources and operating both the Maryland and District of Columbia funeral homes. However, after the six days of riots that erupted in Washington, D.C., following the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. in 1968, the Hines and Rinaldi families decided to relocate their entire funeral business to a new facility in Silver Spring.

That new location opened in 1972 as Hines-Rinaldi Funeral Home on New Hampshire Avenue. Frank remained president of the company until he retired in 1991. In 2012, Hines-Rinaldi Funeral Home became part of Dignity Memorial, the largest group of funeral, burial, cremation and cemetery service providers in North America.
